Oscar Pistorius, is an Afrikaans athlete and sprinter who were tried and sentenced to five years of imprisonment and banned from the sport for shooting and killing his girlfriend. Oscar Pistorius is an aspiring sprinter who was later proved guilty for murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, by firing a pistol during an argument. Oscar Pistorius was due to run the 100m and 200m in the London Olympics when he killed his girlfriend. The South African is expected to appeal his conviction. While other athletes around the world were shocked by the judgement, this issue created great controversy and went viral in the country.

Oscar Pistorius was arrested on the 26th of February, after a 24-year-old woman, Ms Steenkamp was shot in the head. Oscar Pistorius was arrested on the same day as the shooting incident took place and charged with the murder. He was found guilty of the crime of culpable homicide on the same day and sentenced to five years of imprisonment.

Oscar Pistorius had to go through several trials and he and his uncle were tried separately. He was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison after the case against him for the murder of his girlfriend, Ms Steenkamp, went to court and the trial was heard in South Africa.

There are many controversies surrounding this case. Many people have opposed the verdict and there is even a petition requesting the government to allow an amnesty in the event that the death penalty is not imposed on Oscar Pistorius. In fact, this is the first ever case where a defendant was convicted of a capital offence, which did not involve intentional murder and who was sentenced to imprisonment. However, the government has not ruled out the possibility of carrying out the execution of Oscar Pistorius.

Even though Oscar Pistorius had shot his girlfriend and is serving five years of jail sentence, there is a lot of debate over the verdict and whether or not the trial was fair. People want justice to be given in the case and want to see the death penalty carried out.

Whatever the verdict in the case, Oscar Pistorius should be allowed to have a fair trial and be given a fair judgment. If the government feels that it would not be in the interests of the country to carry out the death penalty, then it should do it, without prejudice.
