Book Review – Book of Laughs

In the gripping debut novel from New York Times Bestselling author and Screen Actors Guild Award winner, Tony Kushner, entertainer-turned-reporter Billie Eilish sees the world from the point of view of an actress who doesn’t have much of a career. As she sits through press conferences and auditions, she yearns to perform in a play and reach the height of her celebrity. However, Billie’s troubled past as a prostitute provides her with an edge she needs to discover the true person inside the mask she wears for public view.

If you’ve never read this book before, you’re likely to be captivated by the tale it tells because of the way it combines history, Hollywood, sex, and religion. Nevertheless, if you have read it, you’ll find this author’s debut is different. You might say, ‘This isn’t your Mother T and Grandmothers’ library story.’

It’s a funny, moving, and even touching tale about a girl who began her life as a gangster’s daughter, took the name ‘Eilish,’ and then found herself trying to navigate the murky waters of fame and fortune in Los Angeles. The Book of Laughs is where this girl meets the people she loves and falls in love with. Billie Eilish chronicles her journey as she becomes a star and discovers the true person hiding behind her famous mask.

The book takes place in the years after the birth of her first child. Here, she attends theater rehearsals, plays, and various auditioning that finally land her in the final stages of her young career. She becomes deeply interested in how she gets by while looking forward to achieving a higher level of fame and fortune.

One of the funniest moments in the book involves one of the actors-turned-performers (called Dead Mans) who claims to be friends with a woman named Madame Mugabe. They go out to dinner and just keep drinking-and then Dead Mans just can’t take it anymore. It’s not the first time this group of celebrities has gotten into trouble and Dead Mans just doesn’t seem to care anymore.

The humor in this book may be a bit over-the-top, but that’s part of what makes it so interesting. There are also plenty of twists and turns that keep you guessing. All in all, if you like your entertainment with a pinch of drama, you’ll love the characters in the Book of Laughs.

At the end of the day, this is a must-read book and the narrator is very funny and makes the book so enjoyable. You’ll love this book.
