Oprah’s Experience With The Oscars
Oprah and I met at a celebrity party that I was throwing for someone. I said, “Here’s your chance to meet Oprah, she’s wearing a nice dress!” She looked surprised and said, “Oh, I like it but don’t you think you should wear something better?”
So I went over to her table and we talked for a bit about the upcoming Oscars and decided that she would be best for my coming in the morning with a new presentation. And so that night I went up to her table, and as I sat down in front of her, she said, “Hey it’s you again!”
Oprah and I have been friends for many years. We were both at Yale together and she remembers my grandmother saying she wanted to name the baby that came out of my brother’s vagina, “Oprah.” In fact, this story is mentioned in one of the many books about me. So it didn’t surprise me when Oprah said, “Oh, hello Michael. I thought you had moved on?”
Oprah was wonderful to be with. She was very courteous and so sweet and polite that I could have continued to talk all night. She was also very gracious and elegant and allowed us to put on our tuxes and attend the Oscars without asking or pressuring us to do so.
All the attention was so odd because we had never seen each other before that day. Once we met, we were all smiles and thrilled to be together. It seemed very surreal.
We were all at the Emmys that night and we were all in our tuxedos and we were all surrounded by a beautiful crowd when Oprah came up to us. We started to clap and she waved at us and said, “Wow, you look really nice.”
Then, she asked, “How are you doing?” And as we all stopped clapping, we all looked at her and Oprah said, “They can call me Oprah, but I’m just Oprah.”
We were all shocked by the things that happened during the ceremony. I had never experienced anything like that before and I never will again.
