Authorities say a toxic substance is to blame, but the cause of the mass death is still unknown.

Tonnes of dead fish have been found in the Oder river on the Germany-Poland border since late July.

Authorities have been investigating and both countries believe a toxic substance is to blame, but have yet to identify the source of the spill.
