Priyank Chopra has become a household name in the United States, not just for his many roles on television and film, but for his book, “The Secret.” While the book has not yet been published in the English language, one wonders how much of his novel style was adapted for the screen. This is perhaps the best book ever written on the subject of consciousness, even more so than William James’ book. “The Secret” is a lucid and compelling narrative of a life without limits, with its many hidden meanings and its many profound messages.
Chopra’s mom was from Puerto Rican roots, so the role of his childhood can be seen as a reflection of the life he experienced growing up. His father died when he was in his teens, and his mother, whose father was also a doctor, had her own experiences with grief, alcoholism, and drug addiction. This led to a professional depression that could not be resolved until Chopra found help from Dr. Rajneesh Sarin.
The Indian immigrant Dr. Sarin was quite an interesting character, having spent most of his life dealing with alcoholics and drug addicts in Puerto Rico. He believed that when someone reaches a certain point in life, they need help and turned the studies of psychology into an experiment in addiction recovery. He argued that there were specific qualities that all people can have, including the capacity to live a happy life and a life without abuse of any kind.
Interestingly, this was not the only impact Dr. Sarin had on Chopra. He is responsible for helping to change the way Chopra saw the world around him, seeing life through the eyes of a life-long alcoholic, drug addict, who started out as a humanist and ended up as a kind of evangelist for religion, even introducing the idea of reincarnation to Chopra, who at first resisted the idea, but eventually came to accept it.
Chopra’s enthusiasm for the book that he wrote while suffering from depression and the need to overcome his emotional weaknesses led him to stay committed throughout his life to finding a cure for his alcoholism. In fact, Dr. Sarin did succeed in curing his alcoholic father, but not before Chopra missed several important parts of his childhood. In fact, even in recovery, Chopra was able to make it very clear that the author of his life’s work was his father.
At the end of his life, Chopra was able to give thanks to Dr. Sarin for his help, making it quite clear that he was looking for a spiritual mentor. Though this writer’s father had died, he was unable to fully appreciate his true gift until he found his guru.
Priyank Chopra’s work on “The Secret” is a must read for all who are seeking to improve their life. If you are looking for a person to listen to, then this book is the perfect choice. It is not just for inner peace, but it will be a conversation starter as well.
