Iain Packer tells court he indecently assaulted the 27-year-old but denies her murder eight months later.

Emma Caldwell

The man accused of murdering Emma Caldwell has claimed that women who gave evidence against him were lying.

Iain Packer, 51, was facing cross-examination as he gave evidence for a second day at his trial in Glasgow.

Asked if 11 women who had claimed he had put his hands on their throats were “all liars”, he replied: “Yes”.

He denies strangling Ms Caldwell, a 27-year-old sex worker, and dumping her body in woods in South Lanarkshire in April 2005.

He faces a total of 36 charges of physical and sexual violence involving multiple women.

On the 19th day of the trial Mr Packer arrived at the High Court in Glasgow with his grey hair tied back in a pony tail, wearing a navy T-shirt and dark-coloured trousers.

Advocate Depute Richard Goddard KC resumed his questioning, asking why Mr Packer had lied to police about going in to the home of one former sex worker he was accused of raping.

Mr Packer said: “As I said yesterday I was scared”.

He was then asked about a pattern of behaviour he has been accused of by 11 woman, who all claimed he put his hands on their throats.

Mr Goddard asked: “Are these women all liars?”.

He replied: “Yes”.

Limefield Woods

He was also asked about women who he admits he took to Limefield Woods in Biggar, where Emma Caldwell’s body was found.

He said he had been to the woods on six occasions with six women, including once with Ms Caldwell but he could not remember all the names of the others.

In earlier evidence on Tuesday the jury heard that 25 women had made allegations against Mr Packer, and 12 had claimed he had raped or attempted to rape them.

Asked if these 25 women “from all these unconnected backgrounds and walks of life” were making it up, he replied: “Yes”.

Iain Packer is alleged to have assaulted and murdered Emma Caldwell by restraining her, grabbing her wrists and strangling her with his hands and a cable.

The trial before Lord Beckett continues.
