“Omaha: The City That Dreams” By Scott Gordon – A Review
“Omaha: The City That Dreams” by Scott Gordon is a travelogue by Oprah Winfrey. I always appreciate the Travel Channel’s selections of Oprah and her show.
You should pick up the book because it is the story of a family that dealt with financial disaster during the Great Depression. They overcame and moved on. What really got me was that, they had to move to Omaha, Nebraska because they found no apartments and they lived in a rooming house.
So we meet the Spivey’s who changed their name to Christiana Spivey and we learn what this city meant to her. She lived in Indiana and never got to experience what she called “the heart of America.” However, she did get to see a lot of her relatives. So, her family came here and they did not have a lot of money to start with.
We also meet the Rich Guy, who told about how he had to take a chance because he needed the money and he made money doing business there. He later bought a $10 million house in this city. Although the people in this book seem like they are from the land down under, they can relate to something that is going on in your home.
There are some pictures in the book that show places and stories you could see at the Halloween parade on the floats. I love how they tell the story about the scene from a movie that was supposedly shot in Omaha.
We find out what happened with the crash of the national bank in the city. After a two billion dollar loss on a single day. Although it sounds like an interesting read, I do not think any one person could relate to this.
If you are into memoirs and short books, this is a short read that is shorter than a novel. I love it because I was excited to read about their adventure in life.
To read about their time in a room with no furniture would be fun. Of course, we all have to put up with the craziness of life and deal with problems every day. However, we can find a happy ending if we just give ourselves the chance.
