Symptoms of Mesothelioma – Commonly Found Symptoms of Mesothelioma

If you are interested in learning more about mesothelioma, the disease that affects the mesothelium, it is important to know how it works. This is very common for many types of cancers. Mesothelioma is characterized by the presence of malignant cells within the pleura (the lining tissue of the chest). Because of this malignant tumor, cancerous cells can begin to grow in the area of the chest wall.

Sometimes there are multiple affected areas of the chest. There is no clear indication as to which area is affected. However, if mesothelioma is found to be the cause, then a mesothelioma survivor will have more than one mass or tumor affected in different areas of the chest.

The first thing a doctor looks for is whether or not the cancer cells are malignant or if they are living and dividing within the person’s cells. Malignant mesothelioma grows faster than non-malignant mesothelioma. In fact, these malignant cells have the potential to grow far beyond the average cancer patient. In the event of mesothelioma, there will be minimal scarring.

There are some common symptoms associated with mesothelioma. As stated previously, there are many different types of mesothelioma. What this means is that some types of mesothelioma may have similar symptoms. In fact, these symptoms should not be confused with other diseases that are also affecting the chest wall.

The most common symptom of mesothelioma is chest pain or discomfort. This pain often develops slowly over a period of time. If it does not subside, it is important to see a doctor.

Lung involvement is another symptom that should not be overlooked. Lung involvement is often a marker of lung cancer. As one progresses through the progression of mesothelioma, the airway becomes very narrow. Lung involvement can be treated with oxygen therapy.

If this treatment is not successful, then surgery may be required. This surgery can remove parts of the lung to prevent obstruction. A common symptom of mesothelioma in the lungs is an occasional cough.

Emphysema is another common symptom. The lungs do not produce enough oxygen for the body. Because of this, people suffer from shortness of breath. Emphysema often affects the chest.
