America’s nearly 19,000 Covid-19 deaths passed Italy for most in the world Saturday, a day after U.S. cases topped the half-million threshold
Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resourse Center now tallies 503,594 cases as of 11:42 a.m. Eastern time, and 18,860 deaths across the country. The U.S. is now ahead of Italy for both the highest case count and death toll in the world.
Within the U.S. New York City and its surrounding counties remain the epicenter of the American outbreak.
New York City reports more than 94,000 cases and almost 6,000 deaths from Covid-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, accounting for about 20% and 30% of cases and fatalities, respectively. The New York Metropolitan region counts almost 190,000 cases, almost 40% of the U.S. total. Almost 33,000 people have been hospitalized because of Covid-19 in the state, according to the Covid Tracking Project.

The Detroit metro area as well as Chicago reports one of the highest case totals outside of New England, with roughly 18,000 and 12,400 cases, respectively.
Around the Gulf of Mexico, Miami-Dade County and New Orleans tally about 6,300 cases and 5,400 cases, respectively. Houston reports 3,261 cases.
On the West Coast, Southern California, including Los Angeles, totals about 13,000 Covid-19 cases. Northern California, including San Francisco, totals about 5,000 cases. Washington state around Seattle, where some of the earliest American deaths were recorded, now tallies about 7,000 cases.
Globally, there are now more than 1.7 million confirmed cases. The U.S., along with Spain, Italy, France and Germany are the countries dealing with the most confirmed cases.
