A man who died after a car hit a group of people in Sheffield was a Good Samaritan who came to another victim’s aid, police have said.

Emergency services were called to College Close, Burngreave, shortly after 14:00 GMT on Wednesday following reports of violence and disorder.

As that call was being made, a car hit a group of people, police said.

South Yorkshire Police said father-of-two Christian Marriott, 46, had stopped to help a woman lying unconscious.

It is believed the woman had been involved in an altercation between a group of people.

As Mr Marriott stopped to help, he was hit by a car, police said.

“Numerous” people were also injured in the incident, with one of them in a serious condition and being treated in hospital, they added.

A 23-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of murder.

Another man, aged 55, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and both men remain in custody.
