The end-of-year timetable had sparked concern important legislation could fall away by accident.

The government will ditch its end-of-year deadline to review EU-era laws copied over after Brexit.

Under the Retained EU Law Bill, thousands of laws were due to expire automatically next January unless they were specifically kept or replaced.

It had sparked concern that important laws could fall away by accident.

But minsters have now said that instead of the cut-off point, they will come up with a list of laws they want to replace by the end of 2023.

In a statement, the business department said it would make the change through an amendment when the bill returns to Parliament next week.
