Britpop stalwarts Shed Seven have made chart history as they celebrate their first Number One album.

The aptly-titled A Matter of Time comes 29 years and three months after their 1994 debut Change Giver.

The Official Charts Company said this marked the longest gap between debut album and first Number One for a British rock band.

The York group said: “It’s also our 30th anniversary. What better way to start proceedings?”

The group, comprising Rick Witter, Paul Banks, Tom Gladwin, Tim Wills and Rob Maxfield, added: “We’re just getting started. Thanks to everyone for their support over the years, and especially for buying this record.

“It’s much appreciated; we shall see you on the road.”

Previously, Shed Seven enjoyed six Top 40 albums in the UK.

Of those, four entered the Top 10 on the Official Albums Chart, including 1996’s A Maximum High, 1998 record Let It Ride, 1999 hits compilation Going for Gold and 2017’s Instant Pleasures.

The band originally comprised Rick Witter on vocals, Joe Johnson on guitar and keyboards (replaced in 1993 by Paul Banks), Tom Gladwin on bass and Alan Leach on drums.
