A Tory MP has quit as an aide to Home Secretary Priti Patel over the “deep mistrust” created by Partygate.

Paul Holmes said he was “shocked and angered” by revelations in Sue Gray’s report on Downing Street parties.

The Eastleigh MP said his work on behalf of constituents had been “tarnished by the toxic culture that seemed to have permeated No 10.”

Sue Gray’s report highlighted widespread Covid rule-breaking and excessive drinking in lockdown.

In a statement, Mr Holmes he said the controversy had taken a “great deal of time away” from government efforts to ease the cost of living.

He did not call on Boris Johnson to resign. So far, four Conservative MPs added their voice to calls for the PM to resign, since the Gray report was published on Wednesday.
