Callum Wheeler, who denies murder, “ambushed” Ms James after waiting in woodland, a court hears.
A man has admitted he killed police community support officer Julia James, who was found dead in a wood close to her home.
Callum Wheeler, 22, from Aylesham, is standing trial for murdering the 53-year-old in Snowdown, Kent, on April 27 last year.
At Canterbury Crown Court on Monday, he admitted responsibility for Ms James’s death but has denied murder.
The trial will be presided over by Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb.
Ms James, who had worked for Kent Police since 2008, was found with her Jack Russell dog Toby by her side.
