Team GB will face Canada, Chile and hosts Japan in the group stages of the women’s football tournament at this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Hege Riise

The side will combine England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland players, and be led by interim Lionesses coach Hege Riise.

Tokyo 2020 will be Great Britain’s second appearance at the tournament.

The London 2012 hosts won all three of their group games before losing to Canada in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Brazil and Germany will face each other in a repeat of the men’s Rio 2016 gold medal match after being drawn in the same group.

With only three men’s players allowed over the age of 24 in each squad, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, 28, will be eligible to play for Egypt in Group C.

Canada’s women have won bronze at the last two Games’, while Japan played the first ever women’s game at an Olympics against Germany in 1996.

Chile will make their debut in the tournament after claiming the final qualification spot.

Former Lionesses boss Phil Neville was set to coach Team GB this summer, but he joined Inter Miami in January.

Riise, 51, won Olympic gold as a player with Norway in 2000 and was also assistant coach to the USA team that won gold at London 2012.

Following the Olympic Games, Riise will continue in her role with England until the Netherlands boss Sarina Wiegman takes charge in September.

Group E gets underway on 21 July with Great Britain v Chile and Japan v Canada in Sapporo.
