Mesothelioma Survival Rate – 5 Reasons Why it is So Hard to Survive
The treatment of mesothelioma is very challenging and has to be done on a case by case basis. The survival rate for most patients is not good, especially when it comes to cancer of the lymph nodes. The most common type of treatment for mesothelioma is surgery. The type of surgery used depends on the stage the cancer is in and the location of the cancer.
There are four stages in the disease. These stages are stage I, stage II, stage III and stage IV. Stage I is the least dangerous because it is the first stage of mesothelioma. It is characterized by an increase in the numbers of cancer cells and tumors. These tumors grow slowly but their growth does not cause any pain. There is also no accumulation of fluid beneath the lining of the chest.
In stage II mesothelioma treatment is given to improve the general outlook of the patient. This can be done by removing the affected organs or by adding chemotherapy. Since the disease is in its experimental stage, the chances of positive treatments to improve the overall condition are also high. However, these treatments will not bring a complete recovery. As a result, the life expectancy will still be reduced.
In stage III mesothelioma the treatment is begun to treat the symptoms of the disease and remove the tumors. These treatments will bring some improvement in the overall condition. However, they will not be able to remove all the tumors and cancer cells. At this stage, the outlook for a complete recovery is very low. The treatments for the fourth stage of mesothelioma can be used to extend the life expectancy even further. This is the time period in which the patient has advanced cancer cells and tumors that are difficult to treat.
Stage IV mesothelioma is diagnosed once the symptoms become very severe. The patient’s health is failing fast and he/she cannot take anymore treatment. At this stage, the patient is already at risk of death. In this stage the cancer cells increase in number and the symptoms become more severe.
Although there is no known cure for mesothelioma it can be prevented from spreading. It is important for mesothelioma patients to take precautions when working with or handling chemicals. Regular physical activity and staying away from toxic materials are important to prolong one’s life. In addition, it is also important to eat the right kind of diet and keep a regular exercise. In conclusion, treatments are available to help lengthen the life span of mesothelioma patients but it is still recommended to follow a healthy lifestyle and adopt a behavior pattern in order to have a longer lifespan.
