Pleural mesothelioma can also spread outside of the lungs to other parts of the body, such as the lining of the chest (pleura), the abdomen (peritoneum) and some areas of the brain (encephalon). Some of these areas show increased risk when asbestos fibers are inhaled. This type of cancer can also be found in smokers.
